Severe pain is not typically associated with frostbite in the early stages. In fact, as frostbite progresses, the affected area may become numb, and individuals often report a loss of sensation rather than pain. Initial symptoms of frostbite may include tingling or prickling sensations, glossy skin, and changes to the color of the skin, such as it appearing chalky white.

As tissue freezes, pain may be felt initially when the cold exposure begins, but as frostbite develops, the area becomes desensitized due to nerve damage. This lack of pain sensation can mislead individuals into thinking the condition is not serious, even though underlying damage could be significant. Therefore, while tingling, glossy, and chalky white skin are common indicators of frostbite, severe pain does not align with the typical symptoms as the condition advances.
